There are 300 different species of octopus. If an octopus could take the IQ test, they would outscore most humans on the math portion at a genius level of above 140. To survive in the deep ocean, octopuses evolved a copper rather than iron-based blood called hemocyanin, which turns it's blood blue.
There are 2000 different species of starfish, with the five-arm varieties being the most common, hence their name, but species with 10, 20, and even 40 arms exist. They contribute to the reef's diversity by eating faster-growing coral species, which allow for slower-growing species to thrive.
There are only 7 different species of sea turtles. On the nesting beaches, sea turtles provide key nutrients for the ecosystem through their hatched egg shells. They play an important role in ocean ecosystems by maintaining healthy seagrass beds and coral reefs providing key habitat for other marine life.
There are 47 different species of seahorses and 14 of those were discovered in the last eight years. Few marine predators eat the seahorse, it is too bony and indigestible but it does serve as an enjoyable snack to the sea turtle.
There are about 850 different species of saltwater crabs. Crabs are scavengers that eat the dead stuff that settles on the bottom of the ocean. They reclaim nutrients from the carcasses of larger animal that have died and are themselves prey for other animals like otters or octopuses.
There are over 500 different species of rays that fit into 13 families. They often socialise on the reefs to have parasites removed from their bodies by smaller fish. Their faeces may provide the basis for a rich nutrient supply and fertilizer for healthy coral growth.
